Climb a volcano

Mount Gahinga Lodge sits within reach of the Virunga volcano chain, and three peaks draw most climbers: Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhavura. Difficulty varies between them, but each is a full-day undertaking. Treks begin at seven in the morning from the park headquarters, where guests are driven to the base of the chosen volcano before setting out on foot. The reward for the climb is a wide panorama over the Virunga range from the summit. It is a demanding day, better suited to those with some hiking fitness than to casual walkers.
