Muthaiga Golf Club

Muthaiga Golf Club sits on the edge of Karura Forest in the Muthaiga suburb of Nairobi — a private, member-owned club with an eighteen-hole championship course that has been in play since the 1920s. The course was formally incorporated in 1943 and hosted the first Kenya Open Golf Tournament in 1967, a tournament that has returned here regularly ever since and has drawn players including Nick Faldo, Vijay Singh, Sandy Lyle, Seve Ballesteros, and Ian Woosnam.

In 2001 the club engaged South African course designer Peter Matkovich, and the redesigned course opened in November 2004. The rebuild introduced several new lakes and water features — the club now carries more water hazards than any other course in Kenya — and the greens are widely regarded as the fastest in East Africa. Karura Forest runs along the boundary, and Egyptian geese breed on the lakes. Hole seven is a six-hundred-and-sixteen-yard par five with a dogleg; hole thirteen requires a carry of at least one-hundred-and-seventy-six yards to clear the water hazard.

Beyond the course, the clubhouse holds two bars — the 19th Eagle Sports Bar upstairs, overlooking the eighteenth green, and a main bar at ground level — plus a gym with weights and cardio equipment, a wellness spa offering massage and reflexology, and a café with a barista station serving coffee, sandwiches, and salads.

Membership is by proposal from an existing member of good standing. The club also maintains reciprocal arrangements with clubs in Tanzania, India, China, France, and within Kenya.
