Nahampoana Reserve

Set seven kilometres north of Fort Dauphin, Nahampoana Reserve occupies 50 hectares of tropical garden threaded with streams and footpaths. It now functions as a biodiversity reserve. Paths lead past waterfalls, natural pools and caves, and a short stretch of river can be crossed by small boat. Guides are compulsory; wild camping is not permitted anywhere on the property. The lodge sits within the reserve itself, with double and family rooms opening onto private terraces facing the garden canopy. Its restaurant draws on locally sourced produce, and rooms are kept simple rather than styled. Three circuits structure a visit, running from just over an hour to three hours, covering family-friendly walks, the reserve's horticultural history, and a longer route taking in caves and cascades. A night walk is offered for visitors wanting to see the reserve's nocturnal species. It remains, in effect, a working botanical collection open to the public, not a fixed museum piece.
