Olonana Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary

Glass doors fold floor to ceiling across 130 m² in each of the 14 suites, opening onto the Mara River below. A resident pod of hippos wallows in the shade of acacias directly beneath the terraces. The lodge sits on a private stretch of riverbank at the edge of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, between the Oloololo Escarpment and the water. Architects used adobe, local stone and timber; Maasai women apply fresh clay each year. Three suites include an adjoining bedroom for families. The two-bedroom Geoffrey Kent Suite adds a private vehicle, chef and housekeeper, accessed by a separate road.

Game drives track the Big Five year-round in customised open vehicles. Between July and October the lodge is positioned close to several Mara River crossing points where wildebeest and zebra ford the water during the Great Migration. Guides limit viewings to five vehicles per crossing. Walking safaris and night drives operate in the neighbouring Oloisukut Conservancy, a 23,000-acre tract five minutes from the lodge. Rangers lead walks to track giraffe, zebra and elephant on foot. Night drives after dark reveal aardvark, bush baby and bat-eared fox.

The chef grows vegetables in an organic garden for lunches and dinners served in the boma, an open-air dining area above the river. A heated pool sits within rewilded grounds where staff and guests have planted more than 10,000 indigenous trees—East African greenheart, acacia, diamond-leaved euclea. The spa uses all-natural products; the open-sided gym holds treadmills, bikes, weights and a rowing machine. Hot-air balloon rides lift before dawn. A dedicated A&K Philanthropy coordinator arranges visits to local schools and water-access programmes.
