Robins Camp

Game drives depart twice daily from Robins Camp, led by in-house guides who track buffalo, lion, and elephants across the northern basalt zone of Hwange National Park. The camp sits in a landscape of kopjes, grassed vleis that flood seasonally, and mopane woodland fed by natural springs and seeps. Herbert George Robins acquired the land in the early 1900s and halted shooting across his holdings. He bequeathed the area to the Southern Rhodesian Government in 1939 on condition it remain a game sanctuary. His grave lies near the camp; a tower at the original homestead houses a small museum displaying items from the founding era.

Thirty-six en-suite rooms divide between two sections. Acacia holds 18 units under thatch, hand-painted with Matabele designs; eight form a laager around a central lapa. Mopani contains 18 rooms beneath contemporary roofing, each with a covered veranda. All rooms configure as twin or king, with mosquito nets, overhead fans, and high-pressure showers. Three sets of interleading units accommodate families. Morning drives run after breakfast; afternoon drives extend into early evening in summer. Optional three-hour walks depart at sunrise, led by a guide; groups limited to six. The restaurant serves a full cooked breakfast, à la carte lunch, and three-course dinner. A thatched bar overlooks the pool. The tower — the tallest structure in the park — offers views at sunrise and sunset. The camp is endorsed by Machaba Safaris and lies within range of regular sightings of cheetah and painted dog.
