Salani Surf Resort
On Upolu's south coast, a river mouth resort built for surfers and their families
Set where the Mulivai Fagatoloa River runs into the South Pacific, Salani Surf Resort occupies a stretch of Upolu's south east coast between jungle and lagoon, next to Salani village. The resort has run here longer than any other surf operation on the island, and staff know the reef breaks in close detail. Two waves sit directly offshore: a right that holds its shape at any size, and a left that runs long and hollow over reef and flat rock on a clean south east swell. Guests can watch the left barrel from the deck of their fale most mornings. Trips further afield reach a secluded left tucked into a bay, and a set of north coast breaks reached by a 40 to 60-minute drive, fished only by Salani's own boats.
Lodging is in eight raised fales, each with an ocean view, private balcony, and air conditioning. Elevation lets the sea breeze move through the rooms. Bathrooms are finished in stone, with solar-heated showers open to the air. Housekeeping calls daily, and a safe in the office holds passports and valuables. A saltwater pool sits apart from the surf routine for days when the swell is flat. Boatmen double as surf guides, ferrying guests out to the break and back through a clearly marked channel. It is a small, working base built around water, not a resort in the conventional sense.
