Sambora Kinigi

Set on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Sambora Kinigi sits 300 metres from the Dian Fossey Campus and a five minute drive from park headquarters. The lodge holds seven thatched suites across three room types, each with a fireplace, private terrace and volcano or garden views. The Luxury Cottage runs to 70 square metres, the largest of the three, while the Signature Rooms, at 36 square metres each, can be booked separately or joined as a family cottage sharing a lounge. Mornings begin with birdsong; the gardens around the lodge draw sunbirds and turacos, and a resident guide leads walks for those tracking them. Gorilla trekking into the park's bamboo forest is the main draw, with golden monkey treks and canoe trips on the Twin Lakes arranged as alternatives. Sambora also runs guests out to nearby community projects, among them Hand Spun Hope, a weaving workshop, and Red Rocks Cultural Centre, where basket weaving and banana beer brewing are demonstrated. A driver and guide service can meet guests at Kigali airport and arrange a visit to the genocide museum en route. Check-in is at 2pm, check-out at 11am. It is a small, owner-run lodge, built with conservation and the surrounding community in mind rather than scale.
