SANA Gorilla Rafting puts you on the Birira River in Rukungiri, western Uganda, running through forest on the edge of Bwindi. The Birira is not the Nile — it is a jungle river, smaller and more contained than the well-known eastern Uganda routes, with dense forest on both banks.

Sadat Kawawa, a Ugandan kayaker and raft guide who competes at professional level, leads trips on the water. The river has gentler stretches suited to families with children, alongside more demanding water for full-day and multi-day groups. Every trip includes transport, safety gear, a local lunch, and photographs. Multi-day itineraries add time with local farmers along the route.

Kayaks are available alongside rafts, so paddlers who want an independent line through the water rather than a shared boat have that option.

The location is practical for travellers already moving through this part of Uganda. Bwindi is the base for gorilla tracking, and Rukungiri sits on routes connecting gorilla trekking with other western Uganda destinations. A rafting day fits between activities without a significant detour.
