Saruni Mara

Set on a hill above open grassland, the lodge looks over a valley ringed by indigenous forest, a private wildlife area bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve where membership is limited and traffic stays light. Ten rooms make up the property: five cottages, a family villa and a private villa reached by a short drive of its own. Each room is furnished to its own theme, with a front deck built for watching the plains by day and the stars after dark. Evenings gather around the fire, where the day's sightings get told and retold. Maasai guides lead the game drives, in open vehicles, and walk guests through bush on foot, reading tracks and posture the way locals read a familiar page. Land Rovers here run without side windows or doors. A rhino sanctuary lies about thirty minutes off, where rangers have protected white rhino on foot for two decades. Guests can also reach Kilileoni, the highest point in the wider Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, for a view that on a clear day stretches to the Tanzanian border. The library holds a notable run of rare books, tucked away for guests wanting quiet between drives. Meals lean Italian, built around Kenyan fish and vegetables, and vegetarians are easily catered for. Check-in runs from 11am.
