Mokoro

A mokoro is a traditional canoe, poled by a guide standing at the stern, gliding through the narrow channels and lily-covered lagoons of the Okavango Delta near Shinde. Moving low and quiet on the water gives close access to the aquatic habitat's smaller residents: sitatunga antelope, painted reed frogs, malachite kingfishers and fish eagles overhead. There is no engine noise, so wildlife is often approached at close range. The pace is slow and the water calm, making it a restful counterpoint to game drives, and a distinct way to see the Delta from water level rather than land.
