Sunny Beach Lodge

Aitutaki's western shore, facing the lagoon, is where Sunny Beach Lodge sits on land the family has held for generations. Rata's parents raised him here before he left for New Zealand in 1953; he returned decades later to finish a building project begun in the 1970s, and the lodge took its first guests in 1995. It has grown slowly since, from four rooms to seven. Two beachfront bungalows sit steps from the sand, each with a king bed and room for two. Five garden units suit families, with the same private bathroom and full kitchen in every room. The lagoon runs calm along this stretch, and snorkelling is a short walk off the property. Swimming is closer still, just down the beach. Shops, eateries and a grocery store sit within easy reach on foot or bike, and the town centre is minutes away by car. Sunsets fall over the lagoon side of the island, unobstructed by anything taller than a palm. Guests can arrange lagoon cruises, fishing charters or an island night with local dancing through the hosts, or simply rent a scooter and see Aitutaki at their own pace. It remains a small, self-catering base rather than a resort, and that is by design: the family that built the walls in 1976 still runs the place today.
