Built around a wild mango tree, the main deck overlooks the Luangwa floodplain where elephants and giraffe cross in the dry months. Kafunta River Lodge sits south of the park gate in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. The lodge has been run by Anke and Ron Cowan since they arrived in the valley 27 years ago. Eight standard chalets and two luxury suites occupy elevated positions above the plain. Each standard chalet holds twin beds, a verandah, an en-suite bathroom, ceiling fan, and minibar fridge. The two luxury suites stand further from the dining area, each with a double bed on the ground floor, two single beds on an upstairs mezzanine, a separate bathtub, and a viewing deck at both levels.

A natural hot-spring tub fed from a source on the property holds water at 38 degrees. The infinity pool lies adjacent to the bar. Morning game drives depart at sunrise and last four hours, with a tea break. Afternoon drives stop for sundowners and continue into night drives using spotlights. Walking safaris run three to four hours with a qualified guide and scout. In peak season the lodge crosses the river by its own pontoon to reach prime viewing areas. The wellness spa offers treatments between activities. A photographic hide beneath the dining deck faces the lagoon. Cultural visits include Project Luangwa's visitor centre and the Mulberry Mongoose jewellery workshop in Mfuwe village. The Sunset House, a three-bedroom canvas-roofed villa with private pool, butler, chef, and guide, opened at the end of 2023. Laundry and wireless internet are complimentary.
