Boating Safaris

During the January-to-April Secret Season, rising rivers and lagoons cut off the roads into Kakuli, so a boat becomes the way in and the way to explore once there. Guides steer close enough for guests to watch hippos and crocodiles at close range, while the swollen waterways and thick vegetation draw migratory birds in full breeding colour. Clear air in these months suits photography, with dramatic skies and the occasional sudden storm. Game stays abundant, including strong odds of spotting wild dogs. It is a quieter, wetter side of South Luangwa, reached and explored largely by water.
