Tongariro National Park Guided Walks

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing covers nineteen kilometres of volcanic terrain in the central North Island, passing through craters, across lava fields, past mountain springs, and beside the emerald lakes that sit in the high crater basin. The walk takes around eight hours. A guide goes with you the entire way.

The guides assess weather and track conditions throughout the day, manage your transport pick-up, and adjust the pace and timing as conditions change. On a route this exposed — the track climbs above the treeline and stays there for much of the day — having someone read the mountain rather than the weather app makes a practical difference. Where the track allows, guides route groups away from the heaviest foot traffic while still covering the main sights.

Mount Ngauruhoe stands between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu, and you walk in full view of all three for much of the day. The vegetation changes noticeably as you gain altitude: shrubland gives way to tussock, then to bare volcanic rock and ash. In winter, snow covers the upper sections; in summer, the high basin holds colour from late-flowering alpine plants.

Access is from the National Park area in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. Transport to and from the trailheads is arranged as part of the guided service.
