Tongole Wilderness Lodge

Set on the forested banks of the Bua River in Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Tongole Wilderness Lodge holds four riverside suites and one family cottage built from local red earth and rock. Two suites have super-king double beds; two have twin beds that join. All are en-suite with twin marble basins, a walk-in shower, and a sunken bathtub large enough for two. Wraparound wooden decking faces the river and forest. The family cottage adds a second bedroom and a communal lounge.

Electricity and hot water run on solar power throughout. A shaded pool deck, a fire core, and elevated seating areas overlook the river. The bar stocks local and premium spirits; cocktails are made to order. The four-course dinner menu rotates seasonally and includes vegetarian options with advance notice. Breakfast is continental or cooked; lunch is served at the lodge between activities.

Guided walks and drives depart with trained scouts through the reserve, which is managed in partnership with African Parks. Canoeing and fly-fishing run on the Bua. Cultural visits and bird safaris are arranged through the lodge. The airstrip sits three kilometres away; flying time from Lilongwe is thirty minutes. Road transfers from Lilongwe take three and a half hours. Laundry service is complimentary.
