White Pearl Resorts

Ponta Mamoli, on Mozambique's Lagoon Coast, gave White Pearl its site: a sheltered bay backed by dune forest, chosen so the resort could be built on timber stilts rather than levelled ground. That decision still shapes the place. Twenty-two suites stand raised above the sand on wooden platforms, a method meant to keep the fragile dune ecosystem intact beneath them. Six Beach Pool Suites sit directly on the beachfront with private access to the shore; sixteen Pool Suites climb the dunes behind, each with its own plunge pool, deck and outdoor shower, looking out over the Indian Ocean. Interiors keep to a plain, coastal palette of clean lines and natural linen, air-conditioned against the coastal heat. The waters offshore hold a pinnacle reef, and the resort runs snorkelling and dive trips out to it, along with kayaking and stand-up paddling closer to shore. From July to November, boats go out looking for humpback whales on their migration; between November and February, loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest along the same stretch of coast. A spa, restaurant and bar sit on site, alongside a kids' club for family stays. It is reached by 4x4 along roughly 15 km of sand track off the main tar road, which keeps the bay quiet.
