Canvas and thatch wrap each of 21 tents raised on timber platforms across the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, a 27,000-hectare tract at the base of Sossusvlei's red dunes. Flat rooftops above every tent hold mattresses for sleep-outs under clear desert skies. The lodge borders Namib-Naukluft National Park; an exclusive-use gate cuts travel time to the dune face to minutes, putting guests at Sossusvlei and Deadvlei for sunrise before public-access visitors arrive from Sesriem.

Nineteen standard tents hold twin beds, en-suite showers, and fans; two family units each contain two bedrooms with separate entrances and a shared outdoor deck. A pool sits in the main area; a deck overlooks a waterhole where oryx, springbok, and black-backed jackal appear at dawn and dusk. Guided drives cross the reserve's gravel plains in search of gemsbok, bat-eared fox, and spotted hyena. Electric fat-tyre bikes cover ground silently on morning or afternoon rides.

Walking trails follow the dry Tsauchab riverbed near camp. Excursions run to the 30-metre-deep Sesriem Canyon, where water has cut through rock over millennia. Hot-air balloon flights lift before dawn over the Namib Sand Sea; a champagne breakfast follows the landing. You climb the 300-metre dunes on foot and walk among the petrified camelthorn trees of Deadvlei, nine centuries dead and standing stark against white clay. The lodge has a bar, library, and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout.
