Wilderness Serra Cafema

The sound of the Kunene River carries through canvas walls at night; by day the view stretches across water to the mountains of Angola. Eight suites under thatch sit on raised timber decks linked by elevated walkways, each oriented toward the river and the peaks beyond. The standard rooms hold extra-large canopy beds with netting, sunken seating areas, and en-suite facilities with indoor and outdoor showers. One family unit comprises two bedrooms on separate entries connected by a shared deck, each room fitted with twin three-quarter beds and private bathrooms. Interior design draws on Himba visual culture through colour and material; floors are timber, ceilings are woven thatch, furniture is wood and canvas.

The camp occupies a ribbon of green at the edge of the Namib Desert within the 300,000-hectare Marienfluss Conservancy, land held primarily by the Himba. Guided quad-bike excursions follow designated low-impact routes across dunes and into the Hartmann Valley. Nature drives in open vehicles track desert-adapted wildlife — oryx, springbok, Hartmann's mountain zebra — across lunar topography. Walks with a guide reveal smaller inhabitants: desert chameleon, plated lizard, the geometry of fairy circles in bare ground. Seasonal boating on the Kunene, when water levels permit, brings you close to basking Nile crocodiles and riparian birdlife including Burchell's courser and half-collared kingfisher. Visits to Himba communities nearby are arranged through community agreement; the experience is not performance but structured respectful engagement with semi-nomadic pastoralists who continue a centuries-old way of life. A bar, library, and pool occupy the main area. Wilderness Air operates the only access; the camp is one of southern Africa's most isolated lodges.
