Ai Aiba Rock Painting Lodge

Ai Aiba sits in the Erongo Mountains of Namibia, where the landscape is dominated by large granite boulders — what remains after roughly one hundred and thirty million years of erosion on a volcanic formation. The lodge holds twenty chalets in twin and family configurations, each air-conditioned, with a walk-in shower, separate toilet, minibar, and a verandah that looks out over the boulders and bush savannah. The main building is a thatched dome containing reception, a guest lounge, a bar, and a restaurant that seats up to fifty guests for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The property's defining feature is its San rock art. More than two hundred recorded sites are spread across the concession, and guided drives of around three hours stop at selected panels where trained guides explain the painted scenes — hunting figures, animals, and human life recorded in the granite over centuries. The lodge name comes from Khoekhoegowab: a word meaning one who leads others along the path ahead.

Guided morning and sundowner walks cover the flora and fauna of the surrounding terrain. A marked mountain-bike trail network, designed with professional trail builders, runs across the property at grades suitable for most riders; e-bikes are available for the afternoon ride. A San Living Museum on site runs two-hour sessions covering tracking, fire-lighting, and bush food collection. The lodge is part of a nature conservancy bringing together private landowners across the Erongo area to manage the landscape, wildlife, and cultural heritage jointly.

The property is malaria-free. Staff speak Afrikaans, English, and German.
