Built by a Costa Rican family on abandoned farmland in Puerto Viejo, Sarapiquí, Ara Ambigua Lodge recovered three hectares of rainforest over fifteen years and operates on eight hectares an hour and thirty minutes from the capital. The lodge draws its water from springs within the protected forest. Two lakes with surrounding trails offer birding routes, and the gardens carry labels showing common and scientific names of planted species. Guests can plant a native tree as part of the reforestation programme.

Rooms stand in garden settings, each with a balcony, private bathroom, hot water, television, air conditioning, coffee maker, and hairdryer. Honeymoon rooms receive special decoration. Family rooms offer more floor space. The lodge holds level-four certification under the country's five-level tourism sustainability standard.

La Casona restaurant serves Costa Rican and international dishes alongside handmade pizza; the bar stocks wine and cocktails. Two pools—one for adults, one for children—lie within the grounds, and a spa with sauna operates on-site. A self-guided trail runs through the protected forest. The lodge arranges night walks focused on frogs, visits to nearby biological reserves including La Tirimbina and La Selva, and rafting on the Sarapiquí river. Conference facilities and an event hall accommodate groups.
