Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch

Riding quarter horses through valleys between red dunes is one way to cross the ranch in silence. Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch sits on the edge of the southern Kalahari near Mariental, 270 km south of Windhoek via the B1. The reserve is crisscrossed by vegetated dunes that run parallel across mixed tree and shrub savannah. A renovated farmhouse holds the reception, lounge, dining room, bar, and library. Four Dune Chalets stand on stilts atop separate dunes, each with a bath and shower, air conditioning, and views southwest across the dune landscape. Two Exclusive Dune Chalets add private plunge pools. Eight Savannah Chalets occupy the valley between dunes—six built with plastered straw-bale walls. Six Garden Rooms sit near the main lodge with private gardens separated by wooden fencing.

Guides lead morning walks with San families to a demonstrational village, where guests learn to collect water in ostrich eggs, set traps, and identify medicinal plants. Four orphaned cheetahs—Ralf, Etosha, Tuano, and family—live in a 12-hectare enclosure managed in collaboration with the Cheetah Conservation Fund. Rangers take visitors through the dunes for close encounters and feeding. Game drives track giraffe, kudu, zebra, oryx, eland, and blue wildebeest across the reserve. Sundowner drives climb to the highest dunes for views over salt pans. Night drives after dinner use spotlights to find aardwolf, bat-eared fox, and wild cat. The ranch also offers star-viewing from an observatory with a computer-controlled telescope.
