Big Cave Camp

Set on a granite whaleback above Matobo National Park in Zimbabwe, Big Cave Camp occupies land the Waddy family has held since 1947. Guests transfer from the car park by 4×4 to reach the lodge at the summit. Ten A-frame cottages built around granite boulders hold 22 guests. Two honeymoon suites — Kozi and Ntwane — include a lounge and sit highest on the ridge; each measures 60 square metres with double basins and a private deck. Six standard twin lodges convert to doubles with king-size mattress converters and sleep two each. One family lodge, Ingwe, adds a double bunk for two children. All rooms have en-suite showers, fans, Egyptian cotton linen, and decks facing the park or the valley below. The Leopard's Lair wraps a 25-metre boulder into the dining room and bar. A teak counter runs along one side; trees grow through the thatch above. A natural rock pool and sundeck lie below the main structure. A cave-style boma holds pre-dinner drinks by lantern light. Guides Shepherd and Tawanda lead rhino tracking on foot in the Whovi wilderness section of the national park, working alongside the anti-poaching unit. Rock-art walks visit Nswatugi Cave and the San paintings within. Half-day drives reach Rhodes Grave at World's View. Bush breakfasts and dinners set up at Leopard Rock on the eastern boundary, facing the granite kopjes that define the hills.
