Blancaneaux Lodge

Blancaneaux opened as a lodge built along Privassion Creek, where the water runs over granite into a chain of swimming holes below the forest canopy. Cabanas, villas, and a single cottage sit among tropical trees and old melastome shrubs, each opening onto the garden or the creek itself. Rooms carry ceiling fans, stocked minibars, a desk, and an Illy espresso machine, plain comforts against a wild backdrop of pine forest and granite boulder. The cottage stands apart, with a view over the Maya Mountains and the falls on Privassion Creek. Seventeen horses fill the stables, with trails running into the ridge behind the lodge. A three-acre organic garden is open to wander. Guided rides, hikes, and mountain biking cover the reserve, and sunrise brings out the forest's loudest birding. You can walk down to Big Rock Falls or spend an afternoon at the Rio On Pools nearby. Beyond the reserve lies Caracol, the largest Maya city in Belize, its ruins rising from the rainforest to the south; Xunantunich and Cahal Pech sit closer to the western border, smaller and quieter. The Rio Frio Cave opens wide enough to walk through underground. Guests can also spend an afternoon learning how cacao is worked into chocolate the traditional way. Meals run to Italian and Guatemalan cooking, with an organic three-course dinner served twice a week, and a bar for evenings by the water.
