Twenty-four thatched chalets beside Uganda's second-largest crater lake with chimpanzee tracking
Viewed from the timber balconies, Lake Nyinabulitwa spreads below the lodge in a volcanic basin rimmed by forest. Crater Safari Lodge sits on a hillside above Uganda's second-largest crater lake, 300 kilometres from Kampala. Fourteen deluxe chalets stand in lawns and gardens overlooking the water. Each thatched chalet has a balcony fitted with chairs or a hammock, a shower, bathrobe, mosquito net, and lounge area. Three chalets include a family configuration. Ten standard cabanas face the swimming pool and hold partial lake views. You can hear giant kingfishers from the deck at dawn.
The main lodge houses an open-plan restaurant, bar, and lounge beneath a thatched roof. A boma area with campfire occupies the grounds. The pool lies on manicured lawns with views across the crater. The lodge runs on solar power. Kibale National Park protects 1,500 chimpanzees and holds the highest density of primates in Africa—13 species in total. Daily guided chimpanzee tracking departs at 8am and 3pm from the Kanyanchu visitor area and lasts two to three hours through the rainforest. Guides lead walks to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, where over 370 bird species have been recorded. A hike climbs to a viewpoint above nine crater lakes. Canoeing crosses the lake. Cultural visits include basket-weaving demonstrations and trips to tea and coffee plantations. The lodge can arrange romantic dinners on the lakeshore by candlelight. Laundry service and wireless internet are complimentary in the main area.
