Twenty kilometres east of Khorixas on the C39, Damara Mopane Lodge sits low in mopane woodland, its 60 chalets arranged in a fan-shaped, maze-like layout across the property. Each room keeps its own small garden behind a low wall, with sunflowers visible over the top from the private stoep. It is a compact, self-contained base. Twyfelfontein's rock engravings lie 100 km off, within reach for a half-day out and back.
Rooms are simple and twin-bedded, with air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and tea and coffee laid out for early risers. A pool gives relief from the heat of the day, and a restaurant and bar cover meals and evening drinks. In the evening, a path climbs the hill behind the lodge to a viewing platform, where the mopane woodland runs out flat toward the horizon as the sun drops. You can hear the quiet settle in after the light goes. Two self-guided hiking trails cross the surrounding hill country, running from one to three hours, and a guided birding walk covers ground rich with resident and migratory species. Guides also run full-day trips to track desert-adapted elephants and visit a Damara cultural village nearby. Check-in runs from 2pm, checkout at 10am.
