Desert Quiver Camp

Set among granite outcrops five kilometres from the Sossusvlei gate on the D826, Desert Quiver Camp is twenty-four self-catering units on the edge of the Namib Desert. Each unit holds twin beds, a fold-out sleeper couch, an en-suite shower, and air-conditioning. The shaded patio is fitted with a two-plate hob, under-counter fridge, barbeque, and a wooden bench. Utility boxes with cooking and eating equipment are available at reception on deposit. Fresh meat, chicken, salads, vegetables, and bread can be ordered daily for delivery before sunset. Firewood and firelighters are stocked at the desk.

The bar sits on the granite ridge with views toward Elim Dune. It opens at fourteen hundred and closes at twenty-two hundred, with fire pits and a television for news and sport. The pool overlooks the grasslands and the dune beyond; sun loungers and benches surround it. Two communal bomas provide barbeque areas and kitchen facilities for groups. You can hear oryx and springbok at the nearby waterhole after dark.

Guided sunrise excursions to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei depart from the adjacent Sossusvlei Lodge Adventure Centre. Walking trails cross Elim Dune at dawn. Sunset drives on the lodge reserve include sundowner drinks. Hot-air balloon flights and six-seater Cessna scenic routes over the dune sea can be arranged. Meals are available at Sossusvlei Lodge restaurant. The Sossus Oasis service station three hundred metres from the park gate stocks fuel, supplies, and has a tyre workshop. Wireless internet is complimentary.
