Reopened in 2025 after a complete redesign, Gorilla Forest Lodge occupies a hillside within the gates of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in southwestern Uganda. The property was founded in 1993 as a mobile tented camp and has since become the only luxury lodge positioned inside the park itself. Bwindi shelters more than half the world's surviving mountain gorilla population — roughly 500 individuals in a forest recognised by UNESCO for its biological significance. The lodge now comprises ten standalone suites set among the trees, each with a private viewing deck and swing chairs made from varnished wood. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the canopy. Bathrooms hold large round baths beneath chandeliers of handmade beads. Four-poster beds have gauze canopies, and Leica binoculars are supplied in each suite for wildlife observation from the deck.
The central lounge, bar, and dining space is open-sided with a double-height timber-beamed ceiling and pale terracotta tones. An Explorer's Lounge holds books, maps, and replica gorilla bones. The spa offers treatments using organic products made in Africa by Healing Earth, with two treatment rooms overlooking a stream. A campfire serves as the evening gathering point, where a resident musician plays traditional African folk songs on a harp. Gorilla treks depart daily with experienced forest rangers who have participated in the habituation process since its inception. Walks to Munyaga waterfall pass through bamboo groves and open glades inhabited by colobus monkeys, forest hogs, and over 350 bird species. You can hear the forest waking at sunrise from your deck. Each stay funds A&K Philanthropy projects supporting local communities and conservation of the forest ecosystem. All meals, beverages, laundry, and a community walk are included.
