Hatari Lodge

Giraffes graze the meadow outside the breakfast terrace. Hatari Lodge sits inside the boundary of Arusha National Park at the foot of Mount Meru, midway along the wildlife corridor that runs between Meru and Kilimanjaro. Nine deluxe rooms and six suites occupy fifteen structures across the property. Each is individually furnished with cushions, textiles, and wall art made by local craftsmen and women — bright colours, hand-painted wallpaper, patterned carpets from Kenya. Open fireplaces warm some rooms during cool months. The six suites combine in pairs to form three private villas with separate dining areas and larger bathrooms fitted with baths. Buffalo, zebra, and antelope move across the grounds. A covered walkway runs through the meadow where warthogs linger in the grass. Meals follow Slow Food principles and draw ingredients from Wondergarden — a network of chemical-free multi-cropping plots farmed with Maasai communities and smallholders across the Kilimanjaro region. The gardens grow indigenous species; you can visit them on foot. Game drives in Mercedes G-Wagons depart for the slopes of Mount Meru and the Momella Lakes, where flamingos gather in alkaline shallows. Walking safaris with armed rangers cross forest to the Tululusia waterfall. Canoes launch onto the Momella Lakes. The lodge runs on biogas and solar power.
