Kalamu Lagoon Camp

Kalamu Lagoon Camp sits in the Luamfwa Concession, a remote block of land off the Luangwa River in eastern Zambia. The camp faces a permanent lagoon, and the dining area is set under large ebony trees at the water's edge. A pool and viewing deck sit to the side, looking out over the same lagoon.

You sleep in one of eight reed-and-canvas tents, each with its own en-suite bathroom fitted with an indoor shower and a separate outdoor shower.

The land holds puku, impala and common waterbuck in numbers, and lion, spotted hyaena, leopard and crocodile move through the concession. Elephant, yellow baboon and buffalo appear regularly, and hippo gather in the Luangwa River nearby. The riverine vegetation and adjacent dambos also draw serious birdwatchers, with a wide range of species across both habitats.

South Luangwa is well regarded as a walking safari destination, and the camp runs guided walks through the riverine bush and open dambos. Day and night game drives cover the broader concession. The combination of walking, driving by day and driving after dark gives you a reasonable range of conditions in which to read the same ground.
