Arriving by boat across Bushmans River is the signature approach to Settlers Drift, a nine-suite tented lodge set above the valley where 1820 Settlers once crossed. The lodge occupies a ridge in Kariega Game Reserve, a twelve-thousand-hectare malaria-free Eastern Cape reserve holding lion, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, and hippo. Each of the nine suites spans 110 m². Interiors divide into a bedroom, separate living area, and full bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, a freestanding bath, double vanity, and private viewing deck. Amenities include air-conditioning, overhead fans, wood-burning stoves, mini-bars, safes, and wireless internet.
Guides lead twice-daily game drives across the reserve to track lion introduced from the Kalahari in 2004, elephant herds that arrived from the Highveld, and leopard monitored as part of conservation efforts for the endangered Cape subspecies. Walking safaris depart with rangers into valleys bordered by the Kariega and Bushmans rivers. River safaris by boat reveal African fish eagles, crowned eagles, and hippo along the waterway. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking operate from the river jetty. The lodge holds a restaurant, bar, wine cellar, pool, library, and a tented wellness sala offering massage and spa treatments. You can hear the river from the terrace. The reserve lies 80 kilometres from Port Elizabeth, ten minutes from Kenton-on-Sea, and thirty minutes from Grahamstown. Children must be ten years or older.
