Opened in August 2025 as Tanzania's first forest lodge, Koroi Forest Camp sits at the base of Mount Meru within Arusha National Park. The camp takes its name from the Maasai word for black-and-white colobus monkeys. Eight chalets stand beneath old-growth trees. Five overlook a glade that floods seasonally and draws buffalo, giraffe, and elephant; three face a stream that runs when the rains come. A ninth structure—a tree house suite—sits elevated in the forest.
Each chalet is built on a timber floor with canvas walls and an en-suite bathroom fitted with a flush toilet and running water. The main lodge area frames views of the glade. At dawn you can hear colobus monkeys calling from the canopy, joined by turacos and hornbills. Night brings wood owls, nightjars, and the occasional growl of a leopard. African civets, mongooses, bushpigs, and buffalo forage in the glade after dark.
Guides lead forest walks through moss-covered ground and morning hikes into the Ngurdoto Crater, where Sykes' monkeys watch from the rim. Longer treks climb to the Meru Crater at higher elevation, moving through heath and moorland. One route follows a river gorge beneath waterfalls. Night drives track nocturnal species with spotlights. A birding excursion crosses the Engikaret plains to find Beesley's lark, a species with fewer than a thousand individuals. The camp serves meals overlooking the glade.
