Kuzuko Lodge

Set on a hilltop above the Karoo plains, the lodge overlooks a 35,000-acre private reserve in the Greater Addo Conservation Area. The reserve formed when 22 farms were consolidated; fence lines were removed and the land returned to wildlife over the past two decades. Elephants that had been absent for 150 years were reintroduced. Three of South Africa's nine biomes converge here: rolling hills and valleys in the south give way to open plains in the north.

Twenty-four thatched chalets occupy the ridge. Each 33-m² chalet contains an open-plan bedroom and lounge, a private deck, and an en-suite bathroom with toilet, shower, and a freestanding bath facing the view. Beds configure as twins or a super-king. Tea and coffee stations, minibars, safes, and Wi-Fi are standard. Five chalets accommodate families with pull-out sofas for children. Three are fully accessible.

Game drives depart twice daily. Rangers drive off-road where terrain permits; the reserve's low guest density allows unhurried sightings of elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah, giraffe, and mountain zebra. Morning drives pause for coffee; afternoon drives stop for sundowners before continuing after dark with spotlights. Guided walks cross a separate 1,500-acre tract with no dangerous game, where giraffe may be encountered on foot. San rock art lies in sandstone caves reached via a two-hour hike. Self-guided trails loop through the immediate landscape. The Inzolo Spa offers massages on private chalet decks or in treatment rooms. An infinity pool, gym, and infrared sauna overlook the plains. Four-course dinners and Karoo high tea are included; the kitchen sources lamb from neighbouring farms and herbs from the lodge garden.
