Kwandwe Private Game Reserve - Great Fish River Lodge
Set on the bank of the Great Fish River in the Eastern Cape, the lodge sits within a 30,000-hectare malaria-free reserve 160 kilometres from Port Elizabeth. Nine independent suites face the river through floor-to-ceiling glass that folds back to merge interior with landscape. Each suite has an en-suite bathroom with indoor bath, indoor shower, and outdoor shower, plus a private thatched terrace with plunge pool. Pewter and glass details offset earthy tones; underfloor heating runs beneath slate floors.

Twice-daily game drives in open six-seat vehicles track lion, leopard, elephant, and both white and black rhino. Rangers and trackers lead morning drives at dawn and afternoon drives that continue after dark. Guided walks focus either on tracking large game—white rhino, black rhino, elephant, buffalo—or on smaller detail: lichen, euphorbia thicket, raptors nesting in thorn canopy. Big-game walks span three to four hours and end with a picnic lunch on the riverbank. Catch-and-release fishing targets largemouth bass in Galpin Dam or yellowfish and carp in the Great Fish River pools.

The main area includes a deck overlooking the river where kudu and Cape clawless otters appear, plus indoor spaces for meals and a small library. Dinners are served in a candlelit room or in the outdoor boma around a fire. A minimum two-night stay applies across all seasons.
