Tracking the wildebeest migration between June and October, Lemala Mara Camp sets twelve tents under Euclea trees in the northern Serengeti. The camp operates as one mobile unit that relocates seasonally to stay close to the herds. In the northern territory, tents are positioned within sight of the Mara River where tens of thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather before plunging into the crocodile-inhabited water on their northward crossing. Between December and March the camp moves south to the Ndutu region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with nine tents on the edge of a permanent marsh, timed to the main calving season when predators concentrate on the short-grass plains.
Each tent holds two double beds beneath canvas, with an en-suite shower and flush toilet. Duvets provide warmth at altitude. The northern location varies slightly each year depending on herd movement, always maintaining enough distance from the river to avoid disturbing wildlife behaviour at the crossing points. Guides lead morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles. Walking safaris track animals on foot across the grasslands. Picnic breakfasts and lunches are prepared for full-day excursions. Coffee is grown in Karatu, dairy comes from farms on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, and vegetables are sourced from Arusha's central market. The camp runs entirely on solar power with reverse-osmosis water treatment. Laundry service and wireless internet are complimentary.
