Lemala Wildwaters Lodge
Set on six hectares of Kalagala Island in the River Nile, Lemala Wildwaters occupies a mid-stream site 25 kilometres downstream from Jinja in eastern Uganda. The lodge is reached by boat only. Ten stand-alone suites rest on elevated timber floors within rainforest; the island's granite bedrock rises beneath them, and grade-five rapids encircle the land on all sides. Raised wooden walkways connect each suite to the restaurant, bar, library, and communal lodge area. Eight standard suites and two private plunge-pool suites make up the accommodation. Glass-fronted windows face the river. En-suite bathrooms hold rain showers. Each suite's secluded wooden deck carries a daybed and a free-standing open-air bathtub with mosquito nets. Standard suites configure as doubles, twins, or triples. A swimming pool cantilevers above the river within the main lodge precinct. Meals are taken poolside; three-course dinners are served by candlelight. A spa operates above the water. White-water rafting, bungee jumping, horse riding, and fishing run from Jinja. The island serves as a platform for birdwatching — turacos, cuckoos, hawks, and eagles are recorded; Uganda holds more than a thousand species. Giant otters and monitor lizards inhabit the Nile along this stretch. The lodge opens year-round.
