Little Birds Paradise
Musanze, once known as Ruhengeri, sits at the edge of Volcanoes National Park, and Little Birds Paradise is set in the neighbourhood along the road toward the gorilla trailheads. The house has four room types, from a simple room with a shared bathroom to a larger room with private amenities. Two of them, Weaver Birds and Sunbirds, take their names from the calls that carry across their balconies. Owner Bernice Iwacu spent ten years as one of the first female rangers in the park before opening her home to travellers, and her knowledge of the region's wildlife shapes the stay. Guests get water and tea at any hour, at no extra charge. The location puts the park within easy reach, and the team helps arrange gorilla trekking, other regional activities, and transport when needed. It is a small, personal setup rather than a resort. Internet access is complimentary throughout, and there is a restaurant on site for meals between excursions. Musanze itself is a working town rather than a tourist strip, so guests staying here meet the neighbourhood, not just the park. Bernice frames every stay as an invitation into her household, and the birdsong from the surrounding trees runs through the day and into the evening, marking one of the quieter bases from which to reach the volcanoes.
