Macatoo Camp - African Horseback Safaris

Macatoo Camp sits in a private concession of four hundred and fifty thousand acres in the south-west of the Okavango Delta. The main reason to come is to ride: horseback safaris take you across the floodplains and through the channels where vehicles cannot go, at a pace that shifts between a walk and a gallop alongside giraffe, zebra and elephant. The horses are selected for calm temperament around game. More than three hundred and eighty bird species have been recorded across the Delta, and large mammals are present throughout the concession.

The camp holds eight tented rooms in several configurations — double, twin, single, triple, a two-tent family suite linked by a raised walkway, and a honeymoon tent with a raised double bathtub and a private dining deck, all looking out over the floodplain. A tree platform a short drive from camp is used for lunches and occasional overnight stays.

Riding is the draw, but non-riders are fully accommodated. Game drives track and photograph birds and large mammals on land; the camp has its own jetty for motorboat excursions when the annual flood arrives; mokoro trips move through the channels by pole; and fishing is possible from both boat and land, casting among water lilies with hippo nearby. Helicopter flights depart and land in front of camp. The camp has a bar, restaurant, pool and library, and runs on eco-friendly principles.
