Makakatana
Set on the western shore of Lake St Lucia within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Makakatana holds eight suites raised on decks above dune forest. The lodge was founded in 1999 and remains the only privately owned property inside the UNESCO-listed park. Five luxury suites sleep two adults plus a child on a day bed; two family suites hold four in interleading rooms; one honeymoon suite includes an indoor bath and outdoor shower. Each room has air-conditioning, a mini-bar, tea and coffee, an en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, and a private deck facing the lake or forest.

Guided eco-boat safaris depart from the lodge jetty at sunrise and sunset, moving quietly through Makakatana Bay to view hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds among reedbeds. A full-day estuary trip includes a thirty- to forty-five-minute game-drive transfer to the Narrows, slow exploration of hippo channels, and lunch onboard. The full-day beach excursion crosses the lake to a sheltered bay at the Eastern Shores, where a short dune-forest walk leads to the Indian Ocean. Western Shores game drives track grazers, raptors, and predators across pans and coastal forest; night drives spotlight nocturnal species including leopard and hyena. The park records over 500 bird species. Add-on excursions include day trips to Hluhluwe–iMfolozi, guided walks on the Eastern Shores, and catch-and-release fishing charters. The lodge has a pool, a boma for open-air dinners, and a main deck overlooking the lake. Staff speak English, Afrikaans, and Zulu.
