Mantsebo Guesthouse

Set in the highland district of Mokhotlong, Mantsebo Guesthouse looks out over the hills of Thabang, Moreneng, in Lesotho's north-east. The area sits within a 50 km radius of some of the country's more notable landmarks, among them Sani Pass, the mountain road that links Lesotho to South Africa and draws 4x4 drivers for its switchbacks, and the Senqu bridge, an extradosed span of almost 900 m under construction across the Polihali reservoir. Skiing at Afri Ski, roughly ninety minutes away, runs from June to August. The guesthouse itself keeps things simple. Rooms range from doubles and family suites to backpacker beds and a separate luxury category, with a conference room and private parking for guests who need either. Breakfast is a daily buffet, and packed lunches or dinners can be arranged on request. Birdwatchers have reason to linger: the bald ibis, after which Mokhotlong is named, along with the malachite sunbird and bearded vulture, are all found near the property. It is a practical base for exploring the highlands rather than a destination in itself, and it treats that role plainly and well.
