Daniela and Alberto — both certified guides from Italy — opened Matimba Bush Lodge on Hans Merensky Golf Course in Phalaborwa in 2017. The lodge overlooks Mala Mala Dam and sits five kilometres from the Phalaborwa gate of Kruger National Park. Four thatched rooms occupy the property, each named for one of the Big Five. All have kingsize four-poster beds with mosquito nets, air-conditioning, marble en-suite bathrooms, safes, hairdryers, and binoculars.
The Elephant Suite — the largest — has a balcony over the dam, a sleeper couch, and both indoor and outdoor showers. The Rhino Suite includes a sleeper couch and private entrance; the Lion and Leopard rooms share similar layouts without the sleeper. Furniture throughout is handmade locally from orange tree. Daniela's wildlife photography hangs in the lounge and guest rooms.
Breakfast is served on the terrace facing the dam. Dinner combines Mediterranean and African dishes at a long table or in the traditional boma under stars. The bar stocks South African wines and Lemondela, a house-made liquor. A wooden gazebo on stilts extends over the dam's edge for massage treatments. The swimming pool has a timber deck; fish eagles call overhead. Hippos and elephants drink at the property regularly.
Daniela and Alberto guide game drives into Kruger in the lodge's 4×4 viewer. Walking safaris, night drives, and mountain-bike trails inside the park can be arranged through Kruger rangers. Cultural tours visit Matimba Day Care, the couple's non-profit preschool project opened in 2017. The lodge runs on solar energy.
