Set within the boundaries of Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park in KwaZulu-Natal's Zululand, the reserve holds two separate lodges on the White iMfolozi River corridor. Mthembu Lodge occupies the river embankment with seven one-bedroom suites and two family units, each suite constructed of stone, timber, and glass. Biyela Lodge sits higher on the hillside above the floodplain, with twelve standalone suites positioned to face the sweep of grass and water below. Both properties are off-grid.
Mthembu suites open through floor-to-ceiling glass onto private decks that overlook the river. Each has a king or twin beds, a freestanding bath, an indoor shower, and an outdoor shower facing the water. Family units add two twin beds in a second room. Materials include stone, earthen wood, leather, and brass. Biyela suites are built into the slope in rectilinear pavilions; most have private plunge pools. The design draws on indigenous plants used in traditional medicine, reflected in a colour palette of olive, pea green, chartreuse, silver grey, and umber.
Guided game drives run twice daily through the reserve. You track lion, cheetah, elephant, rhino, and buffalo across grassland and savannah; herds of buffalo and elephant move regularly through the property. Walking safaris cross the immediate wilderness on foot with a ranger. The reserve borders the larger Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, where controlled burns in late winter stimulate fresh grazing that draws herbivores and predators alike. Birding walks focus on migratory and resident species along the river.
Both lodges serve plant-based and locally sourced dishes; South African wines accompany meals. Mthembu and Biyela each have a spa treatment room, a library, a pool, and communal dining areas. The property lies two and a half hours north of Durban by road.
