Mount Etjo Safari Lodge

Mount Etjo Safari Lodge sits inside the Okonjati Game Reserve in Otjozondjupa, central Namibia — 36,000 hectares of thornveld carrying over ten thousand mammals, more than six hundred bird species, and a waterhole directly in front of the lodge where animals drink through the day and night. The reserve was built from scratch by conservationist Jan Oelofse, who leased a worked-out cattle farm in 1975 and spent three decades buying neighbouring land and reintroducing species. Rare animals here include black and white rhino, sable and roan antelope, cheetah, nyala, and mountain reedbuck.

The lodge holds twenty-two en-suite rooms in several configurations: a two-bedroom villa with a private pool and lake views across one hundred and eighty degrees, king and twin suites with fireplaces, family rooms with Jacuzzis overlooking the waterhole, and a wheelchair-accessible room. Campsites sit about three kilometres from the main lodge, each with electricity, hot water, and a view over a waterhole.

Activities include twice-daily game drives, guided rhino tracking on foot, a ground-level photographic hide at a waterhole that seats up to four people, and evening lion viewing from a permanent blind. The lodge also runs structured fourteen-day wildlife protection courses for volunteers who join anti-poaching patrols alongside rangers.

The Oelofse family established the Mount Etjo Rhino Trust in 2015 to raise and rehabilitate rhino orphans, with the aim of returning animals to the wild population. Meals are buffet-style and draw heavily on vegetables grown in the lodge's own garden and on game meat from the reserve. Rates include dinner, breakfast, and Wi-Fi.
