Mount Meru Game Lodge
Departing on a village walk from the gates, guests follow staff through Usa River township, population twenty thousand, to observe daily life on foot. Mount Meru Game Lodge was founded in 1959 when Hungarian conservationist Dr Andreas von Nagy bought the southern-slopes estate as a family home and opened an animal sanctuary. The original farmhouse, built in the 1930s, now houses the bar and dining room. Twenty-four en-suite rooms occupy single-storey chalets set in grounds thick with palms and mango trees. Each room is fitted with a mosquito net, fan, safe, and free wireless internet. Family rooms hold one double and two single beds. Triple and twin configurations are available. Four rooms feature roll-in showers and wider doorways. All bathrooms have showers only.

The alfresco restaurant sits beneath mature trees overlooking a dam where water buffalo wallow. Meals are cooked from scratch; the dinner buffet runs nightly. Wood-fired pizzas are served Thursday through Sunday. A riverside spa offers in-room massage treatments by appointment. The outdoor pool lies within the garden sanctuary, where a raised walkway winds beneath acacia canopy. Colobus monkeys, yellow-billed storks, and ibis inhabit the property. Day excursions include canoeing on Lake Duluti, a volcanic crater lake fifteen minutes by road; coffee-plantation tours demonstrating roasting and grinding; and mountain-bike rides through farms at the foot of Mount Meru. The lodge stands between Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport, thirty minutes from each. Laundry service, luggage storage, and filtered drinking water are complimentary.
