Mount Nelson sits on Orange Street in the Gardens quarter of Cape Town, between the lower slopes of Table Mountain and the city centre. The building is painted pink. Seven separate historic wings spread across nine acres of gardens, with Canary Island Palms lining the driveway and a wild olive tree on the grounds that is nearly two hundred years old. The hotel holds one hundred and ninety-eight rooms and suites, from superior rooms of around twenty-five square metres to deluxe garden cottage suites with their own terrace, rose garden, and fireplace. It has been open since 1899.

Two heated outdoor pools are available to guests: the main pool, and the adults-only Cottage Pool in the garden. Two floodlit tennis courts come with a resident tennis coach. The Librisa Spa is closed for renovation until October 2026, with a temporary spa running from Taunton House in the meantime.

There are eight places to eat and drink. Amura, helmed by three-Michelin-starred chef Ángel León, serves seafood with daily-changing menus based on responsibly sourced fish. The Red Room by Chef's Warehouse runs a Pan-Asian sharing menu, reached by a separate entrance and a lit stairway. Afternoon Tea in the Lounge has run since 1989, served by a trained tea sommelier with a selection of more than sixty loose-leaf teas. The Verandah offers a three-course seasonal dinner menu that changes every two weeks.

The hotel is twenty kilometres from Cape Town International Airport. A complimentary drop-off service covers any destination within three kilometres of the hotel.
