At sunrise, Namib Sky Balloon Safaris lifts passengers over the dune ridges and flat desert plains of Sossusvlei, inside Namib Naukluft Park. The balloon travels silently — no engine noise — and the scale of the landscape, orange dunes giving way to rocky outcrops and the granite mountains of Namib Rand Nature Reserve to the east, is easier to read for it.
The flight begins before dawn, when the crew inflates the balloon as the sky starts to lighten. Once airborne, you drift across the park at whatever height the wind allows, looking down on the dune crests and the flat clay pans between them. After landing, the crew sets up a breakfast in the desert. The pilot hands each passenger a flight certificate before a nature drive returns the group to the pick-up point.
The operation started in 1991, founded by Eric and Nancy and now run by the second generation, Denis and Andreia, from Farm Geluk 138 outside Sossusvlei. Namib Sky holds a non-scheduled air service licence and an air operating certificate issued by the Namibian Civil Aviation Authority. The company also established the Namib Sky Community Trust, which opened the first lower primary school and early childhood development centre in the region. Transfers to and from the launch area are available.
