Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary

Founded in partnership with the Puros Conservancy, one of the last wilderness areas in north-west Namibia, the lodge sits on the banks of the Hoarusib River in Kaokoland, fifty-five kilometres from the Skeleton Coast. The dome at its centre is styled after traditional Himba homes; the colours and materials echo red dunes and pale sandstone. Seven suites occupy individual pavilions with king-size beds, air-conditioning, corridors leading to bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, and private terraces with day beds facing the desert. A two-bedroom suite has its own open-air bar, a private boma, and two bathrooms with freestanding tubs. Interiors use timber, bone-white walls, and fabrics in terracotta, sage, and yellow. An infinity pool faces the dunes.

Twice-daily drives cross the conservancy with Himba guides, tracking desert-adapted elephant, giraffe, oryx, and lion. The Hoarusib has carved cliffs and clay castles—geological formations that rise hundreds of feet above the riverbed. Walking trails begin at the lodge. Guests can visit a Himba village to see how the community uses ochre pigment for protection from the sun and manages livestock in the arid landscape. Sundowners are served on dune crests. The lodge is solar-powered and draws water from an underground borehole. Staff speak English. The property is malaria-free.
