Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park sits in the Lambwe River Valley in Homa Bay County, western Kenya, on a narrow peninsula of land that extends toward Lake Victoria. The park is the only place in Kenya where roan antelope still live — a critically endangered species that has disappeared from every other protected area in the country. Rothschild's giraffe and the endangered blue swallow are also present, alongside oribi and the wildlife more commonly associated with open savannah.

The terrain is a mix of rolling grassland, open woodland thickets, and black cotton clay soils that the Lambwe River waters seasonally. To the southeast, the Kanyamwa Escarpment rises sharply; to the north, the volcanic Ruri Hills form a clear boundary. The park is long and narrow in shape, contained within this corridor of valley floor.

Visitors can game drive, walk with a guide, and hike on the escarpment. The park also hosts the Roan Antelope Half Marathon, a running event that draws athletes and conservation partners from the surrounding communities. Camping is available through Kenya Wildlife Service public and special campsites; special campsites are reserved exclusively for one group at a time and require visitors to bring all their own equipment and supplies.

The park is managed by Kenya Wildlife Service and holds a national recovery and action plan specifically for the roan antelope.
