Sasaab
Named for frankincense, Sasaab sits above the Ewaso Nyiro river in Samburu land
Named after the Samburu word for frankincense, Sasaab is built into a cliff above the Ewaso Nyiro river in West Gate Community Conservancy, northern Kenya. The lodge holds nine rooms, each with an open-air bathroom, a private plunge pool, and a veranda facing the river or the arid country beyond. Rooms 1 to 4 carry rooftop beds for sleeping under open sky, with more planned across the lodge. Interiors lean North African in style, a deliberate counterpoint to the Samburu land around them.
Game drives run by day and by night, tracking elephant, lion, leopard and cheetah, along with birdlife drawn to the river. A helicopter is based at the lodge for part of the year, and quad bikes, camel rides and fly camping extend the ground covered on foot. Guests can also visit a nearby Samburu manyatta or join a market day in the district. It is a lodge built around a working partnership with its neighbouring community, which shares directly in what guests bring.
An infinity pool sits at the cliff edge above the river, with a separate lap pool near the outdoor gym. Meals combine Kenyan produce with a North African turn, served on an open deck over the water or privately by request. Check-in runs from noon.
