Shimungwe Lodge
Four suites on the Timbavati riverbed in Thornybush with flexible photographic safari schedules

Glass windows wrap three sides of each suite and frame the Timbavati riverbed below. Four suites accommodate eight guests in total — a small count that makes exclusive-use bookings viable for photography groups or families who want the entire property and schedule to themselves. The lodge sits in Thornybush Game Reserve, a private reserve within the Greater Kruger ecosystem in South Africa's Limpopo province. Shimungwe means Bateleur in Shangaan — the short-tailed eagle that rocks and tilts across the sky above the reserve.
Game drives depart at dawn and dusk as standard, but exclusive-use groups set their own hours. Vehicle positioning adjusts for angle and light; off-road driving is permitted where conditions allow. Ranger and tracker pairs such as Lucan and Daniel have worked this ground for over 20 years. That depth of local knowledge translates into sightings of denning wild dogs, hyena pups, and Big Five movements read hours in advance. Specialist guides — wildlife photographers, birding experts — can be brought in by the group or recommended by the lodge.
Each suite includes a king bed, air conditioning, and an outdoor shower beside the indoor bathroom. A private deck faces the riverbed where elephants, giraffe, and antelope move through marula and knobthorn trees. The main deck holds a pool, bar, and dining area under thatch. The lodge opened in August 2022 after years as a private residence; the family atmosphere persists in the layout and the continuity of the team.
