Shinde Footsteps

Set on the northern rim of the Okavango Delta, inside the Shinde Private Concession, Shinde Footsteps was rebuilt at the end of 2022 and reopened the following May. It is a small camp. Four canvas tents on raised decks sleep a maximum of six guests, each with its own bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower, and a porcelain wash basin. One tent splits into two bedrooms sharing a bathroom, suited to a family travelling together. The concession mixes floodplain and channel, so days move between game drives, mokoro paddled along quiet water, and walking safaris tracking spoor left overnight by lion, leopard, wild dog and hyena. A specialist walking guide can lead up to six guests further into the bush on foot, the original form of safari here, with no vehicle required unless the group grows. Elephant, red lechwe, zebra, giraffe and the elusive, water-loving sitatunga move through the surrounding islands and floodplain. Birdlife is dense enough to reward a slow morning with binoculars alone. Game drive vehicles are capped at four guests each, with a guaranteed window seat and its own camera mount. Evenings settle around a fire on the sand, well after the vehicles are parked for the night. A small photo editing suite lets guests work through the day's images before the next one begins.
